 Financial Controller

Location: Springfield, MA (In-Person) Salary: $90,000 – $120,000 per year Industry: Federal Government Construction & Infrastructure Reporting to: Chief Financial Officer (CFO)

The Opportunity

Our client is a premier leader in the Federal Government Construction sector with a 30-year legacy of excellence. We are seeking a sophisticated and highly analytical Controller to serve as a cornerstone of our finance department. This is a "player-coach" leadership role designed for an accounting professional who excels in the nuances of Job Costing, WIP (Work-in-Progress) analysis, and the rigorous compliance standards required by federal agencies (DoD, GSA, FEMA).

Essential Leadership Functions

Financial Governance & Reporting

  • Full-Cycle Financial Management: Lead the month-end and year-end close processes, ensuring all financial activities are recorded accurately and in accordance with GAAP.
  • WIP & Revenue Recognition: Oversee complex Percentage-of-Completion revenue recognition, performing deep-dive analysis into job costing to ensure project profitability aligns with projections.
  • Financial Presentation: Assist the CFO in the preparation, analysis, and strategic presentation of monthly financial packages for executive leadership.
  • Asset Protection: Establish, monitor, and enforce robust internal controls to safeguard corporate assets and ensure data integrity across all platforms.

Technical Operations & Compliance

  • Federal Audit Readiness: Serve as the primary point of contact for external auditors and government agencies; ensure the firm remains "audit-ready" under FAR (Federal Acquisition Regulation) standards.
  • Treasury & Cash Management: Prepare and execute weekly positive pay files; monitor cash flow and reconcile all General Ledger accounts to maintain impeccable financial standing.
  • Tax & Regulatory Compliance: Oversee the preparation and filing of monthly sales tax reports and ensure strict adherence to federal, state, and local legal requirements.
  • Fixed Asset Stewardship: Manage and update depreciation schedules and fixed asset tracking for a large portfolio of construction equipment and technology.

Team & Process Optimization

  • Departmental Leadership: Oversee day-to-day accounting operations, including the review and approval of accounts payable and general ledger coding.
  • Process Engineering: Partner with the CFO in a weekly strategic meeting to refine month-end closing processes and implement departmental efficiencies.
  • Mentorship: Lead the training and professional development of junior accounting staff, fostering a culture of precision and accountability.

Candidate Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • Experience: Minimum of 4–7 years of progressive accounting experience, with a heavy emphasis on Construction Job Costing.
  • Technical Mastery: * Advanced proficiency in Sage 300 CRE (Timberline) and Procore is highly preferred.
  • Experience with TimberScan, LCP Tracker, and digital takeoff tools.
  • Deep understanding of Davis-Bacon Act compliance and certified payroll requirements.
  • Core Competencies: * Analytical Rigor: Ability to synthesize abstract financial data into actionable problem-solving strategies.
  • Adaptability: A self-starter who thrives under the pressure of tight federal deadlines and evolving project scopes.
  • Judgment: A high level of professional discretion and attention to detail.
